The Story

Imagine being a young married father of 28 being faced with the imminent possibility of losing both his wife and daughter during childbirth if he didn’t make the right choice.  I was that young father and here is my story. In February 2000, my pregnant wife grew extremely ill to the point where she had to be hospitalized. At the time, she was only 7 months pregnant.  She was severely ill, and the situation grew worse by the hour until it became a terminal situation. Due to the severity of her illness, the doctors informed me she would die if we didn’t take my daughter right away.  At the same time, there was only a slim chance of my daughter’s survival. You can imagine the level of fear and hopelessness I felt at that moment.  It was imperative that I made the right choice to give my daughter a chance at life and save my wife. As a result, I decided to allow the premature delivery of my daughter and they both survived.

Due to the premature delivery of my daughter, she weighed 1lb when she was born. She was also diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy which is a disorder that impacts the brain, muscles and joints which could impair the ability to see, walk and a host of other things. Her chance for long-term survival were slim with all odds stacked against her.  I am happy to say that after countless surgeries, therapy and other procedures, my daughter is now a thriving 23-year-old woman who attends college and currently working.

She beat every odd and conquered every adversity with strength, tenacity, and grace. She is a beautiful person with a sweet tender heart.   Every day I thank God for her for she is my hero.  It all came down to the fact that I was given a chance to make a choice that resulted in saving two lives.

Due to my personal inspiration from my daughter and my love for children, I want to do something to help children grow and thrive, giving them a sense of pride and purpose.  I want to provide programs that create pathways and chances to make good choices that result in positive outcomes for their lives.  Ultimately, I want to help children beat odds whether social, physical, or mental to become productive citizens that make positive contributions to our world.
